Avalon Rock Pool – Sydney: All You Need To Know!

Located at the southern end of the popular surf beach of Avalon is Avalon Rock Pool – a popular ocean pool along Sydney’s Northern Beaches.

Built amongst the rock shelf, Avalon Rock Pool is loved by locals and visitors and is a great place to visit on a hot day! Avalon Rock Pool has two sections – the main adult pool and a smaller children’s pool.

The main ocean pool is 25 metres long, and the smaller shallow children’s pool lies adjacent, making it the ideal spot for kids to enjoy.

The children will also enjoy the little rock platforms to explore, plus there is plenty of space here to sunbathe!

There isn’t much shade by the rockpool until the afternoon, so if you wish to get a break from the sun, head to the grassy area on the reserve behind the beach where there is lots of shade from trees.

Amenities At Avalon Beach:

You’ll find toilets, showers and changing rooms at the Avalon Surf Life Saving Club, located right on the beach. The Beach House Avalon Cafe was a popular cafe here at the SLSC but it has sadly closed.

Close to the rock pool however you’ll find the coffee shop Classic Coffee, and just a couple of hundred metres back from the beach you’ll find Avalon Parade and other streets with a great selection of local cafes to head to for a coffee or healthy snack afterwards!

There is also a playground, picnic area and skate park on the reserve.

When Is Avalon Rock Pool Cleaned?

Avalon Rock Pool is usually cleaned every Friday during the summer (and every other Friday during winter). Check here for the Avalon Rock Pool cleaning roster as times and days may vary occasionally.

How To Get To Avalon Rock Pool:

If coming by car, access to Avalon Beach and rock pool is from the carpark off Barrenjoey Road in front of Avalon SLSC.

This parking is right next to the beach, and there is pay and display parking here from 7am until 7pm. There is some free 3-hour car parking on Avalon Parade if you don’t mind the short walk to the beach.

If coming on public transport from Sydney CBD, take the 190X bus from Wynyard to Avalon Beach. The journey takes around 1 hour 10 minutes, and then it’s less than 200 metres to walk to the rock pool.

If coming from Manly, take the 199 bus (journey time of one hour), and again walk the 3-minute walk to Avalon Rock Pool.

Coastal Walks From Avalon:

From Avalon you can stroll north on the Avalon to Palm Beach Walk, where you will walk past Whale Beach and the beautiful Whale Beach rock pool.

Alternatively you can do the walk south from Avalon Beach to Newport Beach, via Bilgola Rockpool – one of the quieter rock pools in Sydney!
