How To Get To Choui Fong Tea Plantation

By Car/Scooter

If you’ll be visiting Chiang Rai independently, a very convenient way to reach Choui Fong Tea Plantation is by hire car or scooter. From Chiang Rai city, take Highway 1 (Phahonyothin Road) northbound until you reach Mae Chan District.

At Pa Sang Junction follow the signs for Doi Tung, Mae Salong. Follow the signs on this road for the Choui Fong Tea Plantation. The roads are very accessible.

Renting a scooter is a lot cheaper than a car, but a car is obviously going to be more comfortable with air-con, especially in the heat of the summer!

If you plan to rent a car or scooter in Thailand, you’ll need to have an International Driver’s Permit, otherwise if the police pull you over, you can get a big fine.

Choui Fong Tea Plantation is on the way to The Gold Triangle, so you may want to combine the two for a half day/full day trip.

By Grab Taxi

Getting a Grab Taxi (Asia’s equivalent of Uber) to Choui Fong Tea Plantation is also a very easy and stress-free way to get here.

Just bear in mind that iIf you’ll be getting a Grab, it’s a very wise idea to negotiate with the driver a return fee for them to wait for you and bring you back to Chiang Rai, as it will be very, very hard to pick up a driver from here otherwise.

We paid 430 THB each way to our driver, which included him waiting at the tea plantation for us to finish.

On A Tour

Alternatively, there are guided tours from Chiang Rai that include a visit to Choui Fong Tea Plantation in addition to visiting other tourist spots in Chiang Rai.

This is my favourite tour as it combines a trip to the Choui Fong Tea Plantation with a visit to Chiang Rai’s most famous temples (The White Temple & The Blue Temple),  as well as the Golden Triangle!

Enjoy Lunch Or A Coffee At The Restaurant/Café

There are two cafes/restaurants at Choui Fong, where you can enjoy some really good meals and drinks overlooking the tea fields. Try the green tea smoothie and a fresh green tea rolled cake – delicious!

The cafe is open air, but with a covered roof so you can get a break from the sun, and it sits right in front of the rows of tea plants. The views are just stunning from here, you can get some lovely pictures as the tea plantation is just below you.

The cafe is very modern, with areas to sit on cushions on the floor Japanese style for a more laid-back vibe, or at normal tables to enjoy the views.

Walk Around The Plantation

There aren’t guided tours of Choui Fong, but you can walk around some of the rows of tea plants yourself and get some nice photographs.

There are plenty of pathways between the tea plants that you can walk along, so make sure not to step on any of the plants. As you walk around you’ll be able to see the workers in the fields collecting the tea leaves!

Tea Tasting

Choui Fong offers various types of teas that you can try in a tea tasting session if you wish!

Buy Some Tea At The Tea Shop

There’s a shop on-site where you can purchase different varieties of tea and tea-related products if you want to bring some back as a souvenir! I love how there was no pressure at all to buy anything, unlike in other places you may visit – it was such a nice environment!

How Long Should You Spend In Chiang Rai?

Some people only visit Chiang Rai for a day and then head back to Chiang Mai.

It’s true you can see the best of the city – including some of the best temples in Chiang Rai in just 24 hours, but to really enjoy it, it’s a good idea to spend at least two days in Chiang Rai so you can visit all the temples without being rushed.

There are also some really nice cafes in Chiang Rai that are absolutely worth a visit, such as the stunning Lalitta Cafe featuring an indoor waterfall, which is very close to the Wat Huay Pla Kang temple.

Another must-visit cafe is the Cat ‘n’ A Cup Cafe close to the Chiang Rai Night Markets – a lovely cafe with the most gorgeous cats that is free to visit!

If you plan to get to Chiang Rai by bus from Chiang Mai, I definitely recommend to book your bus ticket in advance with 12.go Asia.

This ensures you can get the cheapest price, as well as the bus time that you want, as there is only one bus company that operates between the two cities!
