1. New Zealand

New Zealand has long been the ultimate outdoor playground for explorers who seek out the best in adventure travel.

It is an absolutely breathtaking country, and a must-visit for anyone who loves the outdoors, mind-blowing scenery, and adrenaline-filled activities.

From incredible snow-capped mountains to geysers and the insanely coloured Lake Tekapo surrounded by pink lupins, the varied landscapes on New Zealand’s South Island are something special that’s for sure.

If you’re into hiking, the iconic Milford Track is a must to really capture the natural beauty of the country. And be sure to visit Lake Matheson for the picture-perfect reflection of Mount Cook in its waters.

Experiencing the indigenous Maori culture is a must when you’re on the North Island, whether it’s going to a haka performance, or visiting a real Maori village in Rotorua to experience the culture – it’s incredibly fascinating!

One thing I love about Chile is the astonishing amount of extremely diverse landscapes it fits in, from the arid, Mars-like terrain of the Atacama Desert to the wild wonders of Patagonia and the towering, snow-dusted peaks of the Andes.

It’s honestly like you’re flipping through a collection of postcards from different planets. 

If you love trekking, you will fall in love with the rugged gem that is Torres del Paine National Park.

Offering world-renowned trekking amid awe-inspiring peaks and lakes, the views are jaw-dropping, and the experience is nothing short of incredible!

Patagonia is also a must-visit to witness the incredible endless fjords and glaciers that you can see on sailing adventures.

And further north, Alaska is a wilderness paradise, offering incredible wildlife encounters for kayakers and whale watchers

Safari enthusiasts in Nairobi can also witness the Big Five and an abundance of wildlife in their natural habitat without having to go far from the city, as Nairobi National Park is just a few kilometres from the city.

In addition, you can feed the giraffes at the Giraffe Centre, or visit the orphaned baby elephants at the Sheldrick Elephant Orphanage – all in a day in Nairobi!

Travellers can also immerse themselves with the Maasai culture and tribespeople to learn about their way of life and traditions – it’s incredibly fun and interesting and was one of my favourite experiences!

Mount Kenya, the nation’s highest peak, challenges climbers with its snow-capped summits and diverse ecosystems. Trekkers can explore lush rainforests, alpine meadows, and glaciers, making this a unique mountaineering experience.

To the west, the Great Rift Valley’s escarpment offers unforgettable paragliding experiences with sweeping views of lakes and geological wonders like Hell’s Gate National Park, a fantastic setting for rock climbing and hiking adventures.

12. Mexico

Mexico’s diverse terrain and vibrant culture make it an ever-popular destination for adventure travel.

The Riviera Maya, nestled along the Yucatán Peninsula, is renowned for its stunning cenotes, unique underwater sinkholes you can swim in that make for some very impressive photos!

The central highlands in Mexico reveal the striking landscapes of the Copper Canyon, a network of interconnected canyons that dwarf the Grand Canyon in size.

Machu Picchu, an Incan marvel perched amidst dramatic peaks, is the crown jewel, with the Inca Trail offering a path steeped in history and natural splendor.

The Amazon Rainforest also covers a significant part of Peru, and the Tambopata National Reserve unveils some incredible biodiversity and opportunities for wildlife spotting, and canopy walks.

Adventurers can paddle through waterways, seeking glimpses of pink river dolphins and elusive jaguars.

Further south, the Nazca Desert intrigues with its mysterious geoglyphs, or you can go sandboarding down the towering sand dunes in the desert oasis of Huacachina if you’re seeking a different kind of adventure.

14. Thailand

Thailand is a very popular destination for adventure travel enthusiasts.

Northern Thailand, with its mountainous terrain, beckons trekkers to explore the lush jungles and visit remote hill tribe villages.

City lovers will enjoy spending 3 or 4 days in Bangkok, and be fascinated by its many temples, from Wat Arun and Wat Po to the Marble Temple.

And don’t miss the chance to visit the famous floating markets or train market.

For a backpacking adventure, take the overnight train from Bangkok to Chiang Mai.

Chiang Mai serves as the gateway to adventure, with activities like zip-lining through the rainforest canopy and embarking on thrilling white-water rafting journeys.

There are also opportunities to volunteer at responsible elephant sanctuaries.
